OBJECTIVES
The 4th «European Symposium on Research in Architecture and Urban Design EURAU’08» Cultural Landscape is organised by the Superior Technical School of Architecture of the Technical University of Madrid with the support from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.
Landscape and Culture have established themselves in the last decades as two structural aspects in contemporary Europe’s Project and construction. A debate which deals with research about concepts, instruments and actions within the deep changes now taking place in Europe’s university system.
This meeting in January 2008 aims to build upon the previous editions, which took place in Marseille in May 2004, about Considering the implementation of doctoral studies in Architecture, in Lille in November 2005 under the theme Considering space on a large scale and in Brussels in October 2006 about Architecture and Heritage. By developing collaboration and permanent scientific exchange between different networks and university or research institutions among European countries, it intends to bring together the scientific and professional communities.
THEMATIC FIELDS
A Scientific Colloquium will take place during the three symposium days, under the form of concurrent debate tables, corresponding to the three thematic fields. The articles selected by the Scientific Committee will be discussed, divided into the following fields:
Field 1: About action/ modern landscapes
A reflection about intervention on Cultural Landscape involving heritage, urban planning and architecture, and about its protection, use and revitalization policies. Archaeology fields derived from the industrial decay, now to be integrated in the contemporary landscape. Territories trapped in the post-tourism society, which builds high residential densities on many of the European waterfronts, causing energy and waste unbalances, as well as exponential mobility and segregation. Landscapes strongly defined by infrastructure and energy.
¿Are we now facing new ways of using and shaping our landscapes?
Field 2: About knowledge/ time landscapes
A reflection about the definition of Cultural Landscape as memory of the territory. The “memory scape” of an Europe without borders, but maybe with new limits, leads us to take a look at the shaping of the territory inside the old “limes”, at the superpositions and changes occurred.
¿Can the new European configuration be translated into a map of memory and change?
Field 3: About training/ interdisciplinary landscapes
A reflection about the changes that Cultural Landscape implies for the professional training of landscape designers, engineers and architects, showing the need to develop specific disciplinary methods. A dialogue between architect and landscape designer that results into a training and professional challenge that affects local, urban and territory scales. A modern look at the landscape through art, show business, cinema, photography; a multisensory perception of a new nature built upon with materials yet unknown. The city of Madrid is here presented as study case and ongoing project. A growing European central region turned into methodological reference.
¿How can we define the appropriate thought and action parameters for the future approaches to Cultural Landscape?
