O Presidente da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa tem a honra de convidar V. Exa. para o lançamento do livro Memória e Artifício: Matéria do Património II coordenado pelos Profs. Doutores António Medeiros e Manuel João Ramos (volume nº11 da colecção Memórias da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa).
Este lançamento realiza-se no próximo dia 4 de Dezembro pelas 18h30 na Sala de Convívio da nossa Sociedade.
O Prof. Doutor Manuel Maria Carrilho, Embaixador de Portugal junto da UNESCO, em Paris, fará a apresentação desta obra.
O livro Memória e Artifício: Matéria do Património II, agora publicado, constitui o segundo volume de uma série dedicada à análise inter-disciplinar do conceito de "património intangível" e da problemática do património em geral.

Ignes Sodre Seminar - Unconscious Phantasies of "Cure" and the Therapeutic Aims of Psychoanalysis
Ignes Sodre, a training and supervising analyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society, and currently Visiting Professorial Fellow, jointly in the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research and the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, will be offering a series of workshops open to students and staff, during 2009-10. These workshops will be freestanding, so participants are free to attend on one occasion or for the whole series. Each will be linked to the theme of ‘cure’ in psychoanalysis. She will draw on clinical material and psychoanalytical theory to suggest how various forms of mental disturbances may be result of unconscious methods of treatment for mental suffering. Clinical psychoanalysis can be seen, from this point of view, as a process of careful, gradual dismantling of methods of ‘cure’ which leave the personality restricted and impoverished. The psychoanalytical idea of ‘cure’ is based on Freud’s method of investigation in which self-knowledge opens a path for more appropriate (healthier) methods of dealing with what have been experienced as unbearable states of mind. This idea has its starting point in Freud’s perception that mental illness may itself be an attempt at cure: “In regard to the genesis of delusions, a fair number of analyses have taught us that the delusion is found applied like a patch over the place where originally a rent had appeared in the ego’s relation to the external world […]the manifestations of the pathogenic process are often overlaid by manifestations of an attempt at a cure or a reconstruction”. (Freud 1924, “Neurosis and Psychosis”).

The language of citizenship has, in recent years, been mobilized by feminists to articulate a wide range of claims and demands. The notions of economic, political, social, cultural, sexual/ bodily, and intimate citizenship, for example, have all been developed and explored in terms of their normative potential and their actual realization. In Europe, in particular, there has been a strong steer from research funders and policy makers towards research agendas which address the question of citizenship in the context of increasingly diverse and multicultural societies.
But, can the concept of citizenship encompass the transformations that feminist politics seek? What are the restrictions and exclusions of contemporary forms and practices of citizenship? How does the concept of citizenship deal with power, inequality, and difference? What are the problems with framing our desires and visions for the future in terms of citizenship in a globalizing world of migration, mobility, armed conflict, economic crisis and climate change? Does the concept of citizenship restrict our imaginations and limit our horizons within nation-state formations? Can it ever really grasp the complexity of our real and longed-for attachments to communities, networks, friends and loved ones? Is it able to embrace the politics of embodiment and of our relationships with the non-human world? How have feminists historically and cross-culturally imagined and prefigured a world beyond citizenship? Is a feminist, queer or global citizenship thinkable, or should we find a new language for new forms of belonging?
We invite proposals for papers that address these questions and the broad theme of the conference. We particularly welcome papers which explore the interface between the feminist academy and feminist activism, and which are interdisciplinary and innovative in method and approach.
Individual paper proposals (max. 200 words) or proposals for panels of three or four related papers (max. 300 words) should be submitted by 1st December 2009.
The conference will take place in central London.

agonia
A relação da arte com a religião (no sentido mais amplo, ou seja, de uma relação com o distante) tem sido, em todos os tempos, estreita.
Por que será que os maiores autores, por muito "ateus" que fossem ou sejam, se cruzam sempre com esse limite de horizonte?
Essas obras deixam-nos sempre exaustos de tanta beleza, de sublime. É por demais, é um sofrimento, como um orgasmo arrastado e exaustivo.
Modestamente (é bom dizer assim) é o que procuro na minha pobre poesia. Esse êxtase, tão pouco à moda, onde se cruzem as mais directas e brutalmente expostas formas de transcendência: a agonia do amor e da morte.

About the Author
Luke White and Claire Pajaczkowska have been researching into the Sublime for some years, as colleagues lecturing in art and design history at Middlesex University. Luke White is Lecturer in Visual Culture and History of Art and Design at Middlesex University, where he also completed his PhD, 'Damien Hirst and the Legacy of the Sublime in Contemporary Art and Culture,' in 2008. Claire Pajaczkowska is Senior Research Tutor at the Royal College of Art where she supervises doctoral research. As Leverhulme Research Fellow into the Sublime and the Transcendent she wrote several essays on the cultures of sublimity. A book Shame and Sexuality: Psychoanalysis and Visual Culture, co edited with Ivan Ward, was published by Routledge in 2008, and an essay 'Tension, Time and Tenderness' in The Virtual and Other Digitalities edited by Griselda Pollock was published by I.B. Taurus 2009. "

In this third volume of his studies into critical Internet culture, following the influential Dark Fiber and My First Recession, Lovink develops a ‘general theory of blogging.’ Unlike most critiques of blogging, Lovink is not focusing here on the dynamics between bloggers and the mainstream news media, but rather unpacking the ways that blogs exhibit a ‘nihilist impulse’ to empty out established meaning structures. Blogs, Lovink argues, are bringing about the decay of traditional broadcast media, and they are driven by an in-crowd dynamic in which social ranking is a primary concern. Geert Lovink is an internationally renowned media theorist and net critic. His many books include Dark Fiber: Tracking Critical Internet Culture, Uncanny Networks: Dialogues with the Digital Intelligentsia, My First Recession: Critical Internet Culture in Transition, and The Principle of Notworking. He is a member of the Adilkno collective (Cracking the Movement, The Media Archive) and co-founder of Internet projects such as The Digital City, Nettime, Fibreculture and Incommunicado. He is founder and director of the Institute of Network Cultures (www.networkcultures.org), professor at Interactive Media (Hogeschool van Amsterdam) and associate professor at the Media & Culture department, University of Amsterdam.
