Human Rights and Visual Culture - A Colloquium
How are human rights represented and disseminated through visual culture? What is the role of visual culture in the formation of human rights politics and practices? How radical is the use of visual, online and web based media by human rights activists? Is there a visual politics of human rights?
This colloquium will bring scholars, campaigners and practitioners together to show examples of human rights in film, television, digital media and photography and discuss ways in which we can conceptualise and understand the emergence of visual culture in the human rights political arena.

Mais um(a) doutorado(a) em arqueologia
Ana Catarina Sousa
doutorou-se há dias em Lisboa, na Faculdade de Letras, com uma tese sobre Penedo de Lexim, concelho de Mafra, segundo comunicado daquela Faculdade.
Dou-lhe os meus parabéns, até porque aquele sítio, ameaçado por uma pedreira quando eu era estudante universitário, me diz muito: fiz lá uma pequena "sondagem" , de colaboração com José Morais Arnaud e Vasco Salgado de Oliveira, que está publicada n' O Arqueólogo Português".

First call for papers:
The concept of assemblage seems axiomatic and is ingrained within archaeological terminology. Following the upsurge of interest in material culture studies, materiality, material agency and human-object engagements more generally, we wish to move beyond assemblage as a descriptive term for aggregates of objects to focus more specifically on how material assemblages are created, enacted and recreated over time.
The affective properties of objects in the singular has attracted much discussion; we wish to build upon this work by considering how objects act together as a group. ♦What is the role of objects in the creation of aesthetic environments? ♦Are aesthetic environments created through object interrelations and what role does intentionality and serendipity play in the process? ♦Are the affective properties of assemblages natural – and thus enduring – or socially contingent? ♦In which case, are the decisions that governed the creation of assemblages in the past recoverable in the material record as it is manifested in the present? ♦What is our role in the re-imagining of ancient assemblages? ♦Can there be a phenomenology of aesthetic sensibility that is valid and rigorous?
We invite papers that explore these themes in any time and in any place.
The organisers expect to publish presented papers in a peer-reviewed proceedings volume.

No âmbito do Ciclo DOCUMENTE-SE! Sentidos do Reconhecimento, estará presente na FLUP a socióloga NATHALIE HEINICH para uma conferência sobre Arte e Reconhecimento: “Art and Recognition”.
No dia 14 de Maio, na Sala de Reuniões da FLUP, às 17h30.
Sinopse
A questão do reconhecimento, tal como ela se impôs nos últimos anos nas ciências sociais graças a autores como Honneth, Fraser, Todorov e alguns outros, é de grande interesse para a sociologia da arte, já que esta tem em consideração os problemas concretos que o reconhecimento coloca aos actores. Por outro lado, a questão da arte permite evidenciar um certo número de pontos presentes nas teorias do reconhecimento. As actividades artísticas, ao reforçarem e legitimarem as desigualdades de competências e “les écarts de grandeur” entre as pessoas, exacerbam as tensões, teóricas e práticas, entre as diferentes concepções do reconhecimento e, nomeadamente, entre respeito e estima, incitando os actores a elaborar compromissos de acordo com a axiologia democrática. Neste sentido, a questão do reconhecimento tende a deslizar de uma problemática do respeito, muito querida dos filósofos, para uma problemática – bastante menos consensual – da estima, obrigando a questionar as condições de uma desigualdade equitativa em democracia.

Nathalie Heinich é socióloga, directora de pesquisa no Centre National de Recherche Sociale (CNRS), membro do conselho editorial das revistas Sociologie de l’art e Music and Arts in Action. Para além dos diversos artigos publicados em revistas científicas ou culturais, publicou obras sobre o estatuto do artista e a noção de autor (entre outras, “Le Triple jeu de l’art contemporain”, Minuit, 1998); sobre a questão da identidade (entre outras, “États de femme”, Gallimard, 1996; “L’ Épreuve de la grandeur”, La Découverte, 1999; “Mères-filles, une relation à trois”, Albin Michel, 2002, com Caroline Eliacheff; “Les Ambivalences de l’émancipation féminine”, Albin Michel, 2003); sobre a história da sociologia (entre outras, “La Sociologie de Norbert Elias”, La Découverte-Repères, 1997; “Ce que l' art fait à la sociologie”, Minuit, 1998; “La Sociologie de l'art”, La Découverte-Repères, 2001; “La Sociologie à l’épreuve de l’art. Venho chamar a vossa atenção para as últimas actividades do projecto A Imagem na Ciência e na Arte antes do início do Crossings que terão lugar já para a semana. Especial destaque deve ser dado ao Colóquio Internacional que irá decorrer no Instituto Franco-Português, nos dias 10 e 11 de Maio. Este Colóquio pretende contribuir para alargar a nossa compreensão do estatuto e das funções que a imagem hoje adquiriu e para pensar o destino da escrita face a essa supremacia da imagem, discutir as suas oposições e complementaridades, as suas divergências e entrelaçamentos.

I'd like to announce the launch of www.mud-brick.com, a multi- authored, general issue archaeology blog aimed at starting a
conversation with the general public. It was developed by archaeology graduate students from universities in New York City. Mud-brick’s mission is to provide people who are interested in archaeology with
informed perspectives from professional archaeologists, facilitating
an ongoing discussion on current archaeological issues. Check it out!

"Etienne Balibar is Professorial Fellow at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities, Emeritus Professor of Moral and Political Philosophy at the University of Paris 10 Nanterre and Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of California, Irvine (USA). Etienne Balibar also teaches seminars at the Centro Franco-Argentino de Altos Estudios de la Universidad de Buenos-Aires (Argentina) and the Center for Comparative Literature and Society at Columbia University of New-York. He is author or co-author of numerous books including Reading Capital (with Louis Althusser) (1965), On the Dictatorship of the Proletariat (1976), Race, Nation, Class. Ambiguous Identities (Verso, 1991, with Immanuel Wallerstein), Masses, Classes, Ideas (Routledge, 1994), The Philosophy of Marx (Verso 1995), Spinoza and Politics (Verso 1998), Politics and the Other Scene (Verso, 2002), We, the People of Europe? Reflections on Transnational Citizenship (Princeton, 2004). He is also a contributor of the Dictionnaire Européen des Philosophies (sous la direction de Barbara Cassin, 2004). Forthcoming are Extreme Violence and the Problem of Civility (The Wellek Library Lectures 1996), and Citoyen Sujet, Essais d'anthropologie philosophique (Presses Universitaires de France). Etienne Balibar is a member of Ligue des Droits de l’Homme (Paris), with a particular interest in the rights of migrants and asylum seekers. He is co-founder of Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace and acting chair of Association Jan Hus France."
