Project HANDTOMOUTH


Postdoctoral research position in psychology and movement science applied to archaeology based in Paris.

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position to carry out research for the European Commission funded project HANDTOMOUTH: a framework for understanding the archaeological and fossil records of human cognitive evolution (website: http://www.handtomouth.ucl.ac.uk/home/). This is a European multidisciplinary project involving Archaeologists, Psychologist, Human Movement Scientists and Neuroscientists.

The study will focus on the perceptuo-motor organisation of tool production at the level of the elementary technical gesture, focussing on the hammering movements used to remove flakes from stone core in Oldowan flake tool production when performed by modern human knappers. A modelling study of the sensitivity of the kinematic analysis of movement coordination dynamics to variation of the limb segment proportions within the known range for fossil and modern Homo will be carried out.

The post-holder will work with Blandine Bril and Gilles Dietrich, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, located in Paris.

Applicants should have a PhD in Psychology or Movement Science with strong interest in behavioural research, or in Archaeology with strong interest in behavioural studies and movement science. Experience in movement analysis is welcome.
