THE CREATION OF MOOD THROUGH OBJECTS

Conference notice:

AMBIENCE AND MATERIAL CULTURE: THE CREATION OF MOOD THROUGH OBJECTS

Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, 2nd May 2008

Mundane objects, which form the bulk of material culture, too often form the silent majority of the material world. This conference will focus upon the way in which objects as a group act together to create mood in a way that is often elusive in archaeology, where the practical focus inclines towards specific objects or connected material groups, rather than disparate objects in combination.

Speakers from the fields of archaeology, anthropology, psychology, musicology and museum design will come together to discuss how disparate objects combine to create mood in the past, in the present, and in our reaction to the past.
